SoWMEX/TiMREX Data Policy

The Southwest Monsoon Experiment (SoWMEX)/Terrain]influenced Monsoon Rainfall Experiment (SoWMEX/TiMREX) Project Data Policy is established to help insure open and timely access to all SoWMEX/TiMREX datasets. This requires a data management strategy that facilitates data exchange and investigators taking responsibility for making data available.

  • SoWMEX/TiMREX will follow general data policy established by the United States National Science Foundation and Taiwan Central Weather Bureau and National Science Council.
  • All SoWMEX/TiMREX data are considered community property for other SoWMEX/TiMREX participants and will have restricted access to this group for a period following data collection until 31 December 2009
  • Special consideration will be given by SoWMEX/TiMREX Science Team to extend restricted access on specific research datasets being primarily used for Ph.D dissertation.
  • All operational data collected during SoWMEX/TiMREX will be publically available from the CWB archive center.
  • All SoWMEX/TiMREX facility providers agree to promptly submit data to the CWB archive center to facilitate further analysis, archival and distribution. Datasets must be submitted to the archive in an .appropriate format. with sufficient documentation to allow easy exchange and understanding by others. Data providers should agree to assist users to resolve problems associated with their dataset.
  • SoWMEX/TiMREX datasets will be classified/defined into four categories:
    • Level I: Raw data
    • Level II: Quality Controlled (QCed) data (facility standard processing)
    • Level III: Research quality data (value added processing)
    • Level IV: Research analysis product (value added/derived products)
  • Level I data should be submitted to the CWB”¦s SoWMEX/TiMREX archive within one month of acquisition. Level I data are raw data to be used for initial examination of the case studies, suitable for preliminary analysis.
  • Level II data will be submitted to the CWB”¦s SoWMEX/TiMREX archive before 31 December 2008 or on a date approved by the SoWMEX/TiMREX Science Team (defined in the SoWMEX/TiMREX operations plan). The SoWMEX/TiMREX Science Team will decide a list of priority case studies before 30 June 2008 by the SoWMEX/TiMREX Science Team and the facility providers agree to make these priority data available before the due date of delivering the Level II data.
  • SoWMEX/TiMREX investigators are encouraged to share Level III and Level IV datasets with others and submit a copy to the SoWMEX/TiMREX Archive at CWB after the work is published.
  • Level II data are considered public one year after they are submitted to the SoWMEX/TiMREX archive or after 31 December 2009, which ever comes first. The SoWMEX/TiMREX archive will be password protected during the restricted access period.
  • Datasets submitted to the archive must adhere to documentation and format guidelines set forth by SoWMEX/TiMREX. It is important that users understand the attributes of the data as well as details about format.
  • SoWMEX/TiMREX investigators and others are responsible for providing appropriate recognition/attribution to data providers in publications. This can include article co-authorship and/or reference to data publications and facilities. SoWMEX/TiMREX Science Team should be contacted before use of their datasets.
